Singapore bags first esports gold as Indonesia forfeits Valorant final due to alleged bug

Singapore bagged its very first gold medal in the esports events in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games after Indonesia forfeited its grand finals match in the Valorant Mixed team event.

With Singapore leading the series, 1-0, after taking the first map 13-8, Indonesia found itself in the rear once more trailing the second map 10-4.

That was when Indonesia protested and alleged Singapore of using a bug that allowed them to see the enemy’s positions. That put the grand finals to a halt before Juanita “Valezka” Tanjung, the brand ambassador for Indonesia in the SEA Games, said on Thursday that the team is formally forfeiting its match to ‘uphold the nation’s dignity and considering the unfavorable conditions of the situation.’

That handed Singapore its very first gold medal in esports ever since the sport was introduced to the biennial meet in 2019. Indonesia settled for silver while Philippines bagged the bronze.

Indonesia, which finished fourth in the standings, pulled off the stunning upset over the Philippines, which was unbeaten through five games in the group stage, in the semifinals while Singapore also claimed the scalp of powerhouse Vietnam.
