Speaking in his own Twitter account, one of the ex-Dota developer, ZoidCTF, elaborated this sentiment. He initially developed the matchmaking for Dota 2 to include 32bit value only, on the notion of there would be one game per second.

It was then revealed that the game count quickly moved to more than 15 games per second. Consequently, this called a cause for the revision of the matchmaking engine.

The developer further revealed that in the span of 12 years, 7 billion matches had been played. Approximately, that would be 18 matches played for the game per second, in the entire lifetime of the game.

It was safe to say that Dota had far surged the initial developer’s expectation in terms of popularity.
