Riot Games, LCS Players Reach Agreement after Infamous Walkout

The North American League of Legends esports players who previously walked out have successfully reached an agreement with Riot Games, the company responsible for organizing the popular League Championship Series (LCS).

Represented by the League of Legends Championship Series Players Association (LCSPA), the LCS players voted to walk out after Riot Games made the decision to allow franchises to cease fielding amateur teams in the North American Challengers League (NACL) for the summer season. The players expressed their concerns regarding this decision, leading to the walkout.

\Subsequently, Riot Games responded by delaying the original start date of the summer season by two weeks, but also cautioned that the entire summer season, which would disqualify LCS players from participating in the prestigious end-of-season Worlds competition, could be canceled if no agreement was reached.

Fortunately, after negotiations between the LCSPA, Riot Games, and the LCS teams, a resolution has been reached. The LCS issued a statement on Twitter announcing, “The LCSPA, Riot, and the LCS teams have come to an agreement to resume the 2023 LCS Summer Split on June 14th.”

The agreement includes certain concessions made by Riot Games and the teams to ensure a more sustainable future for the North American Challengers League (NACL) and a fairer representation of players in their workplace.

One of the key points agreed upon is the allocation of $300,000 to be split among the 10 NACL teams. Additionally, both players and teams will have equal representation on a committee tasked with collaboratively determining any future changes to the practice schedule. Furthermore, the teams have committed to guaranteeing mandated healthcare for foreign players from their first day in the United States.

As a result of the agreement, the summer season, also referred to as the “split,” will commence on June 14th, as confirmed by Riot Games in its own announcement. Notably, the competition will now take place over three days per week—Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday—compared to the previous schedule of two days per week during the spring season.

This agreement marks a significant step forward in addressing the concerns of the North American League of Legends esports players and establishing a more cooperative and sustainable environment within the league. With the resumption of the LCS Summer Split, fans can look forward to thrilling matches and intense competition in the weeks to come.
