Team SMG Deals HomeBois Another Heartbreak En Route to MPL Finals

Team SMG fended off a tough HomeBois squad, 3-2, in the lower bracket finals to advance to the grand finals of the MPL Malaysia Season 11 last Saturday.

HomeBois quickly took a 2-1 advantage in the series – a win away from completely eliminating the top-ranked Team SMG but the latter managed to pull off crucial victories in Games Four and Five to turn back the Steven “Dale” Vitug-coached team.

Down 1-2, Hazziq “Stormie” Rizwan stepped up to the challenge and delivered eight kills and seven assists against one death on Yve to lead his side to a 17-7 Game Four win and tie the series.

With the game on the line, HomeBois managed to grab a hold of the lead late in Game Five – taking down a crucial Lord entering the 17th minute before Aeliff “Smooth” Ariff (Benedetta) went for a split push play that chipped out most of HomeBois’ base.

Team SMG managed to reverse the game by taking the 21st minute Lord and securing a four-man wipe en route to the grand finals. Luk “Valenz” Yip (Franco) played a crucial role as he managed to hook Muhammad “Anip” Rashid’s Melissa that opened the door for a wipe.

This is the second time in the same day that HomeBois squandered a 2-1 advantage.

In the upper bracket finals, the team took a commanding 2-1 lead as well over Todak but lost the next two games of the series which brought them down the lower bracket. 

Unfortunately, they failed to get over the hump as Team SMG claimed their revenge against HomeBois, who handed them their first defeat of the season back in the upper bracket semis.

Team SMG will face Todak in the grand finals while HomeBois will settle for the bronze medal.
