The all-Filipino Team Secret Valorant team made a strong statement by swiftly defeating the European powerhouse Team Liquid in a 2-0 sweep during the opening round of the VCT: Lock//In tournament in São Paulo, Brazil in the early hours of Thursday, February 23.

The Filipinos dominated both maps, Icebox and Fracture, with strong starts that set the tone for the rest of the games. Despite late attempts by the Dutch team to mount a comeback, Team Secret managed to hold them off and secure their place in the next round of the single-elimination bracket, where they will face Natus Vincere.

What’s interesting is that Team Secret achieved this victory using a duelist-less composition, relying on a different strategy that caught their opponents off guard. In the first game on Icebox, they established an early 10-2 lead and managed to hold off Team Liquid’s six-straight round victories, winning 13-8 thanks to outstanding performances by Jessie “JessieVash” Cuyco and Jim “Borkum” Timbreza.

In the second game on Fracture, Team Secret again jumped to an early lead of 9-1, only to see Team Liquid rally and narrow the gap to just two rounds at 9-7. However, Team Secret quickly regained their momentum and shut out their opponents for the rest of the game, winning 13-7.
