40,000 Cheaters Banned From Dota 2 in Valve’s Latest Ban Hammer

Valve has taken action against cheating in Dota 2, with 40,000 players permanently banned just before the Lima Major in Peru.

The game company quickly released a patch that featured a honeypot, which reads data in the game client that can be accessed by cheats.

The banned accounts had all accessed this honeypot, giving Valve high confidence that the bans were justified. Although the nature of the cheats was not disclosed, Valve assures players that the bans were legitimate and that the culprits are now gone from the game.

“The prevalence of this family of cheats means that today’s ban wave is particularly large, but it’s only the latest action in an ongoing campaign.” They wrote.

“While the battle against cheaters and cheat developers often takes place in the shadows, we wanted to make this example visible, and use it to make our position clear: If you are running any application that reads data from the Dota client as you’re playing games, your account can be permanently banned from playing Dota.”

While some players may still use new exploits, Valve believes that Dota 2 should be played on an even field, with wins earned through skill and determination.

Even the highest-ranking players can be caught and punished for cheating. So far, no pro players or content creators have reported being banned.
