Controversy has been surrounding Dotabuff due to their decision to leak private accounts match history. They are ignoring privacy settings.

Although Dotabuff has been a reliable website for statistics, recently they had been too reliable. Dotabuff can now see every player’s match histories, ignoring whatever privacy setting that they have equipped.

This led to a protest, especially by communities close to the professional scene. Match stats are highly valuable, and they are not private anymore due to Dotabuff is a huge blow.

Cyborgmatt, Team Secret’s Manager posted on his private Twitter account addressing this situation. He reasoned that Dotabuff had gone “rogue” and ignored the privacy settings of Dota players.

Now, they are more than capable to expose every single person’s match history, even professional players.

Some were having the opinion that this was solely on Valve instead of Dotabuff. They claimed that Valve deliberately ignored the problem and let Dotabuff “farm” the entire private data of Dota 2.

The flaws of the privacy setting were also highlighted as being the main cause of this problem.

Steam Support has also answered the issue directly to one of the players. From the content of the message, it would seem Dotabuff was exploiting a loophole by running an independent software or parsing replays to get their data.

As such, they were not taking action, although their stance could change in the future.
