Fnatic Qualifies Over Outsiders as per Valve Ruling

Fnatic surprisingly managed to qualify for The International 11 over Outsiders after an announcement by Valve.

Although SEA fans were preparing for a heartbreak, it seems they can rest easy now. Valve has decided on a new ruling that qualifies Fnatic to TI11 over Outsiders.

The surprising move was made by an obscure calculation by Valve, and now SEA will have two representatives in TI11.

At first, people were calculating points based on the Liquipedia website and were under the impression that Outsiders will qualify. However, a change was made in the official Dota 2 website, with Fnatic qualifying over the CIS team.

Then, Valve made an official announcement on their Dota Twitter account, addressing the issue.

The announcement said that they were aware of discrepancies regarding the DPC standings to “unofficial sources”. While addressing the issue, Valve also made it clear that the DPC website reflects the official standings currently.

Some fans tried to do the math over the points calculation and found some interesting things.

It seems Valve has a clear guideline on how they calculate points based on DPC Points penalties. Basically, they do not give partial DPC points and “round” the numbers up. Instead, they always round the DPC points “down”.

With this precedent, Outsiders will only have 1019 points instead of 1020. The “rounding down” rule also existed since past tournaments, dismissing any notion that it was a “brand new rule”.

This put Fnatic up by one point for the TI qualification, making it a necessity for the CIS team to fight through the CIS Qualifier.
