How these mighty teams have fallen!
Aster, Alliance, Virtus Pro, and NoPing will be the first teams to exit the AniMajor after getting upset in playoffs.
Notably, all the said teams were the top 1 from their respective regions. In addition, the said teams were also seeded to the upper bracket of AniMajor with their top 1 regional rank.
Despite being the regional kings, the said teams faced a major upset after getting knocked out of the tournament early in the playoffs.
One of the biggest upset in the tournament is China’s number one Team Aster’s defeat versus TNC. The all-Filipino squad pulled of a massive victory, 2-1, versus Aster despite facing a game one deficit.
The game one of the series looked one sided for Aster. Unexpectedly, TNC gave Aster a taste of their own medicine. TNC climbed back for two consecutive games, finally kicking Aster out of the tournament.
No one ever expected this from Alliance. The number one team of EU had their victory run halted by the underdogs, Team Spirit. Spirit outplayed the Alliance, 2-1, in their playoffs opener.
Spirit blessed the Alliance haters with a 42-minute win in game one. The said convincing win was eventually retaliated by Alliance in game two which forced a decider of a match. With their AniMajor lifelines on the line, Spirit made a decisive strike versus Alliance in a quick 29-minute win with a 25-2 kill score.
The Chinese squad Vici Gaming made VP look like they’re kids after beating down CIS’ top one in the first game of their series. The game one win for Vici Gaming appeared one-sided which they failed to carry up to the game two where VP parried back the favor.
Vici Gaming versus Virtus Pro was forced to a game three where Vici Gaming capitalized on Virtus Pro’s multiple mistakes eventually giving the Chinese team the ticket to move forward from the tournament.
EG started in the lower bracket of the tournament while no ping, being the top 1 in SA, came down from the upper bracket. It was no shock that Evil Genius showed a fearsome prowess as the team is a finalist from the Singapore Major where they placed top 2.
Evil Geniuses took the game one of the series, a favor eventually returned by NoPing in game two. Claiming the throne in America, Evil Geniuses had put their American rival’s run to an end in game three .
All the four teams who have upset regional top teams have now secured their top 8 in the tournament. The said teams now have a guaranteed US$12,500 and 200DPC points necessary for a The International direct invite.
The AniMajor is set to end on June 13. The ongoing Major will be the last chance for teams to get DPC points. Failing to meet the required number of points would force a team to compete in the regional qualifiers.
