The data breach on Indonesian citizens becomes a hot topic again. This time, the leaked data is 279 million Indonesians’ identities from BPJS (Health Social Security Agency) Healthcare insurance.

The 279 million data leak is on sale in an online hacker forum known as Raid Forums. The data seller claims to have complete information on registered participants in BPJS Healthcare, including the National Identity Number, full name, address, email, telephone number, and even salary info.

The data seller said he also had information of the deceased among the 279 million data.

The entire data is sold for 0.15 BitCoin or the equivalent of USD $6,000.

Netizens who were curious about the authenticity of the data immediately send PM to the seller. The seller can prove it by sending the desired National Identity Number. Until now, all netizens who have contacted him have confirmed the authenticity of this data.

This news has reached to BPJS Healthcare itself. They have released a Holding Statement in response to this viral incident.

Broadly speaking, the BPJS Healthcare confirmed that the amount of data until May 2021 was 222.4 million people, not 279 million as it was reported. They are currently working on tracing the leak’s validity if the database is from the BPJS Kesehatan database or not. BPJS Kesehatan also tries to convince Indonesian citizens that the data security of BPJS Healthcare’s participants is fully protected.

Netizens worry about this data leak every year. This is because netizens always get phone messages from anonymous numbers containing loan offers, lotteries, and fraudulent gifts from Indonesian e-commerce. After this data leakage news becomes popular, a lot of netizens claimed to have received more fraudulent numbers than usual.

The government is still trying to solve this leakage problem. Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has confirmed that they have blocked the hacker forum so that it will be not accessed by Indonesians anymore. Unfortunately, this ministry effort seems to be in vain, because the data itself has been sold since May 12, 2021 (according to the seller’s date post on the hacker forum), and several Indonesians have bought it, for more digital fraud materials.
