Since the launch of the Bachelor of Science in Esports degree in the Philippines initiated by Tier One in partnership with Lyceum of the Philippine University last week, discussions over its necessity to land a job in the esports industry have been overwhelming.
With esports enthusiasts, aspiring professionals, and even industry leaders joining in the conversation, leading esports organization Team Secret’s CEO John Yao shared his thoughts on the issue.
âAll the arguments about degrees in esports are quite unnecessary. Thereâs only one question that should matter â will esports companies be more likely to hire you if you have a degree like this?,â Yao said.
Yao added that having an esports degree doesnât have any impact in his hiring decisions.
âAs an employer myself, if I wanted a graphics guy, I would hire the best graphics guy, if I wanted a business development person, I would hire the best salesperson, if I wanted X I would hire specifically for that talent,â he wrote.
âTo me, having an âesports degreeâ doesnât really bear any impact on my hiring decisions. Shouldnât that be the primary decision factor in determining education choices?,â he added.
Last May 7, Tier One and LPU announced its partnership for the Esports program, a first of its own in the Philippines. Upon its launch, netizens scrutinized its curriculum as it mixes several existing fields of study such as Computer Science, Mass Communication, Information Technology, Multimedia Arts, Marketing and Business Management.
Even Tier One Entertainment CEO Tryke Gutierrez, who was part of the realization of this program, said that they, too, cannot promise any jobs for its graduates.
âI specifically mentioned that âweâre not here to promise jobsâ not because I donât believe that there wonât be jobs available but because the realist in me knows that that this course or other courses for that matter wonât give you a 100% guarantee that youâll land you a job,â he said in a post.
