Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the esports industry has continued to grow since January of last year. Currently, Esports has academics, male and female teams and even became a medal competition at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 31. Because of the recognition of esports as legitimate sports, esports organizations have jointly established Esports Certification Institute (ECI) which aims to legalize this kind of sport.

The certification institute was founded by former Dignitas Foundation Director Ryan Friedman and former Vice President of Esports at the Houston Rockets basketball team, Sebastian Park. They want to standardize the recruitment of talent in the esports field, asking athletes and coaches to improve their knowledge.

“Despite the industry’s rapid growth over the past five years, sustaining a career in esports is still limited by fame rather than expertise,” Friedman explains. With esports certification, companies can determine candidate qualifications, creating an industry where everyone is given an equal opportunity to advance in their careers, regardless of individual circumstances.

The Esports Certification Institute will hold a performance-based exam to test anyone looking for a job in the field. The first exam will consist of 120 multiple-choice questions, an essay and tests based on three components: knowledge of esports, statistical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

The ECI exams will be prepared by advisory boards, including industry leaders such as Evil Geniuses CEO – Nicole LaPointe Jameson, FlyQuest CEO Tricia Sugita, Gen.G CEO Chris Park and Cloud9 President Donald Boyce.

Candidates are not only certified but also regularly guided by the advisory board, ensuring long-term success after the start-up process. In addition to tests and certifications, ECI will also launch esports education programs and connect with those wishing to pursue the industry. You can visit the website of the Esports Certification Institute for more details.
